Hoyas Flexing Their Muscles

In two Big East Tournament games the Georgetown Hoyas have shown something they basically didn't show all season. And they shut all their critics up for now with two dominating performances against Villanova on Thursday and tonight against the West Virginia Mountaineers (72:55).

You could sense it, the Hoyas were just tired of hearing about what they can't do and what they lack. They can't shoot. Check, as they rained a Tourney record 17 threes on the Wildcats yesterday. They can only play a zone defense. Check, as they started out both games with a stingy man to man defense, completely taking both their opponents out of their rythmn. They can't withstand runs. Check, as WVU's and Nova's comeback bids were countered with impressive Georgetown runs that put the games away. They can't score. Check, as the team of John Thompson III dropped 82 and 72 points in consecutive games. The Hoyas aren't a contender for the National Championship anymore. Check, as I am sure no team wants to face these Hoyas come NCAA Tournament time.

They did go through an up and down season but that never bothered the tough troops from the DC area around their senior center Roy Hibbert, who dominated in the semifinal with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Just as it never bothers great teams how they do in the regular season. This team is deep, strong and as level headed as they come. They got their flaws but so does many other, much more heralded teams around the country. Not many can match the Hoyas lockdown defense with guys like Patrick Ewing Jr. or Jesse Sapp hounding their opponents into submission. Just ask WVU's Joe Alexander how tough GU's D is... no thirty tonight for him.

The Hoyas seem to be peaking at the right time and that is so important in the final weeks of the season. All those critics over the course of the year motivated Georgetown and you could see that chip on their shoulder the last couple of days, pounding chests, high fiving and bouncing in their steps. And if you ask the Hoyas, they would like to bounce all the way into April.
